There may only be four months left of 2017, but there are still plenty of films to look forward to. Winter sees the release of eagerly awaited films such as The Last Jedi, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Coco, Bright and The Greatest Showman.
However, before that, there is an abundance of great films due to be released this Fall. This list looks at some of the films due for release over the next few months, which are sure to excite cinemagoers. Which ones are you most looking forward to?
10. The Snowman
Release date: 13th October (U.K). 20th October (USA).
What is it about? The Snowman is based on the global bestselling novel of the same name by author Jo Nesbo. When a young boy finds his missing mother’s favourite scarf wrapped around the neck of a sinister looking snowman, crime squad lead detective Harry Hole (played by Michael Fassbender) is called in to investigate. He soon begins to suspect that a serial killer is on the loose.
With the help of recruit Katrine Bratt (Rebecca Ferguson), they must work against the clock to connect decades old cases to the horrifying new one in hopes of catching the culprit before he strikes again on the next snowfall.
Why you should watch it: The trailer is full of high tension and dread inducing scenes, which suggests that The Snowman could be a nerve wracking and uneasy watch. The film has a distinctly Nordic noir vibe, which is enhanced by the wintry and snow filled shots and locations.
Nordic noir is renowned for being dark and morally complex, but is also highly engaging and usually involves the uncovering of long hidden secrets. Director Tomas Alfredson also directed 2008’s ‘Let the Right One In, so audiences can expect horror style chills and built up tension along the way. Overall, The Snowman has the potential to be one of the best thrillers of the year.
9. Thor: Ragnarok
Release date: 24th October (U.K). 3rd November (USA).
What is it about? Thor: Ragnarok is the sequel to 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. It is also the seventeenth film instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thor: Ragnarok finds Thor imprisoned on the far side of the universe, where he is pitted against fellow Avenger The Hulk in a gladiatorial contest. Thor must race against time in order to return to Asgard, and stop the villainous Hela and the impending Ragnarok – a series of events foretold to ultimately result in the doom of the Asgardian civilisation.
Why you should watch it: Arguably one of the best trailers of the year, the Thor: Ragnarok trailer teases an action packed, funny and vibrant film. The Marvel films are always eagerly anticipated and Thor: Ragnarok is no different. Thor: Ragnarok also has a different feel from the previous Thor films, which was an intentional creative choice and will give fans something new from the franchise.
In terms of the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok plays a significant role in setting up Avenger: Infinity War and so is an absolute must see for fans of the films. Early projected box office figures show that Thor: Ragnarok is poised to be the biggest hit of the Thor franchise, and one of Fall’s biggest films.
8. Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Release date: 20th September (U.K). 22nd September (USA).
What is it about? Kingsman: The Golden Circle (also known as Kingsman 2) is a sequel to the 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage by a ruthless new organisation called ‘The Golden Circle,’ the Kingsman must seek out new allies. They find these in the form of Statesman, secret agents from the United States, and together they band together to defeat a ruthless new enemy.
Why you should watch it: The 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service was a financial and critical success, and was director Matthew Vaughn’s most commercially successful film to date. The second instalment Kingsman: The Golden Circle looks set to be another box office hit. The trailers have been well received, and showcased the film’s unique action sequences and humour.
With the film reuniting both director Matthew Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman, Kingsman: The Golden Circle should be able to successfully recreate the fun and entertainment value of the first. Matthew Vaughn has already revealed that he has a third film in the series planned, and so hopefully
Kingsman: The Golden circle won’t be the last we see of Eggsy and the Kingsman.
7. Stronger
Release date: 8th December (U.K). 22nd September (USA).
What is it about? A biographical drama film based on the memoir of the same name by authors Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter. The film follows Jeff Bauman (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who loses both of his legs after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Jeff must come to terms with his new life and learn to adjust, as he battles towards both emotional and physical rehabilitation.
Why you should watch it: This film comes less than a year after ‘Patriots Day,’ another film depicting the events and aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing. Yet Stronger is different enough to not feel like overkill.
The film boasts strong performances, and Jake Gyllenhaal in particular has been called Oscar worthy in this film, with his performance being called a must see. In amongst the plethora of sequels and big blockbusters, Stronger is a nice change of pace for cinemagoers this Fall. Stronger is promising to be an evocative mix of drama, emotional storytelling and a worthy tribute to its inspiration Jeff Bauman.
6. Murder on the Orient Express
Release date: 3rd November (U.K). 10th November (USA).
What is it about? Based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name. Detective Hercule Poirot must solve a murder mystery aboard the luxurious Orient Express in a race against time, before the killer strikes again. But in a case where every passenger is a suspect, Poirot has his work cut out in order to search for clues and crack the case.
Why you should watch it: This classic whodunit murder mystery boasts a star-filled cast, and gorgeous visuals. Kenneth Branagh takes on both directing duties and the lead role, and has spoken about how he wanted to completely create the feeling for the audience of being onboard the train – he has concentrated on every little detail in order to perfectly capture the craftmanship of the Orient Express.
The first trailer for the film was surprisingly thrilling and intense. It also used an interesting juxtapose of the look and feel of a period film with Imagine Dragons playing over the closing parts. This surprising contradiction suggests that this 2017 adaptation may indeed bring something new to this well-known story.
